Does Hildie like the Brother Hugo and the Marguerite books? My granddaughter is a few months younger, and I am wondering if they are appropriate for a preschooler who has a reasonable attention span, or if we should wait a little longer.
Thank you! We’ll start with Brother Hugo and move on to Marguerite a little further down the road. I love that you are sharing these children’s books reviews with us!
Haley have you ever read any Brian Doyle? I feel like I am always recommending him but he's definitely my favorite literary discovery of the past 5 years.
One of my favorite questions! 😄 I think the easiest place is One Long River of Song, a posthumous collection of his essays. Most of my favorites are in there: What Were Once Pebbles Are Now Cliffs, Two on Two, Because It's Hard, and His Last Game are great. Oh, and the last paragraph of A Prayer for You and Yours is so perfect that I want it read at my funeral.
If you enjoy his style and humor in essay form then you'll probably also like his fiction; if not then just abandon ship because his style and voice are pretty distinct no matter the genre. My favorite of his novels is Mink River and its semi-sequel The Plover, but I also loved Martin Marten. Happy reading!
Just ordered Brother Hugo and the Bear as there were only two copies left on Amazon UK and I bet they’ll sell quickly after your recommendation 😉. I have been on a children’s book buying hiatus for a while because so many I’ve bought have been rubbish but I trust your recommendations! (Actually, the last thing I ordered was a pre-order for your new mouse nuns book!)
Put Brother Hugo on hold at my library-- thanks for the recommendation!
My pleasure!

She's loves Brother Hugo! Marguerite is a little bit higher level/more text.

I haven't but I keep hearing about him so I need to. Where should I start?

Brother Hugo and the Bear looks delightful! I'll have to pick up a copy. Thanks for the recommendation Haley!
You’ll love it!

It’s such a lovely little book! You won’t be sorry!
Ahh!!! The Miracle Club looks incredible - I can't wait to see it!
The bear on the book cover has the same look on his face as our puppy when he's gotten something forbidden to him. 😄
Same! It looks so good!
