I love your thoughts on social media. I only used Twitter briefly and felt like a bad version of myself the whole time, so I deleted it. I had no idea they were pushing back against Substack so much. In that case, I’m even happier to be here knowing that it’s subverting Twitter so some degree!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Twitter. I’ve been looking for a way to leave ever since the takeover. I recently departed TikTok and it was easier than expected: I created no content there so I just went through the accounts I followed, unfollowed those that were mindless entertainment and went through each remaining and found a less toxic platform to follow them on. I only needed to completely leave behind two accounts. Time to do this with Twitter as well. I use Facebook “subversively” to keep in touch with older friends/family and I only follow accounts that “spark joy” on Instagram and often avoid the comments section. I also mostly gave up IG for Lent, and it was a palate cleanser!
If you like Arthurian literature, I recommend The Pendragon Cycle to everyone. It’s definitely not a traditional retelling but it is shot through with the search for the good, beautiful and true. For a better world with the Summer King
Ahhh the millennial album article! So fun! I gave Postal Service a listen a few weeks ago, and it brought me right back to 2004. Also appreciate your fresh take on social media/Twitter.
I'm still trying to be healthy on Twitter. I have found that taking weekends off, not having it on my phone, and using the Hootsuite App protects me somewhat (not entirely).
I hadn’t heard about Laura’s breast cancer until reading this and it shook my world a little bit. I don’t know any of you blogging mamas personally, but many of you have guided me through your writing as I grew (and grow) into my own as a young Catholic woman without much devout family to lean on for the like. I’m so glad there is Substack - it’s my favourite platform thus far. Thanks for sharing! ❤️
I couldn't agree with you more about Twitter! I left the Bird App for three main reasons: 1.) It was a huge time sink, 2.) the rampant cruelty, 3.) Musk's offensive against Substack links.
I'm already feeling better after a few days off Twitter!
I tweeted a bit after the terrible Nashville shooting and it reminded me how exhausting and fruitless debate is on that platform. I spent time writing up a longer essay expanding my thoughts and posted it on Substack where I have a certain degree of trust with my subscribers. They know I’m a person and viceversa. It was so much better!
I really appreciated your take on the Nashville incident Haley, and I'm glad you posted your thoughts here on Substack.
I had a similar experience recently after I tweeted some anti-war and anti-arms race opinions. Some of the blowback I got was pretty intense. After one particularly hurtful exchange, I decided I was done with Twitter for good.
I would love to read children's book reviews!
Oh, and I forgot to say, I would loooove to read your children’s book’s reviews!

One of my favorites!
Makes me so happy to hear that! I love it!!!
David Copperfield was added to my TBR after reading the excellent modern retelling, Demon Copperhead. It was by far my favorite book I read in 2022.
I love the Mail Bag feature idea!

I think about going to ACL with Andrew Appling every time I hear "Somebody Told Me"
2004 was a great year!
Thank you for sharing the podcast about learning to read! This topic is fascinating (and horrifying) to me!

Taking it off my phone has definitely helped.
This is my favourite part of Friday! Great reading list for my weekend coffee breathers
Aw, thanks!

Laura is a treasure.
