That anti-feminism article was so good! I so agree. I read Gress’ book and was really surprised and disappointed. Now I’ve found Abigail and Erika and am finding what I thought I’d find in Gress.

Thank you for the mention! I'm praying for you as you approach surgery. LOTR sounds like a great recovery plan!

Count on my prayers for your upcoming surgery, Haley! Thanks for the links, especially the one about physical book collecting. I was just lamenting last night how many of the mid-twentieth century SF/F authors that I enjoy have fallen permanently out of print. The only options to read them seem to be expensive vintage copies or low quality kindle SF "bundle packs". Maybe I'll write something about this issue for my own Substack.

Wow This is a fantastic list of links. Thank you so much for sharing these! Surprised and happy to see that NYT article. I have friends in the medical profession who have been afraid to voice these concerns... Although they're very real! And per your message about nostalgia thinking, very true (and midnight in Paris is such a great movie)... Here's a quote from the transcript of a podcast interview with Paul Kingsnorth that I thought articulated what you're talking about re Christian hope (while still acknowledging the very real challenges of the moment you are in):

" So every time you go through this cycle of 40 days of fasting and then a feast at Easter, something else deepens. It’s like you just dropped a couple of inches deeper into this thing that you’re in. And as I say, the world changes shape. So that is the kind of steady hope, and it’s always there. It doesn’t matter what humans do, and not everything is under our control. And that’s okay. There’s always something else. There’s always somebody holding you. That’s how it feels. And it’s rather wonderful. It doesn’t remove the struggles from your life, but it means that they’re in the bigger context of you always being held and watched by something much bigger that’s happening."

Thanks for the tip about Gaskell. I will add her to my list.

“He is making all things new, not merely turning back the clock.” Thank you for this reminder. The pull of nostalgia is strong. May the pull of new creation be stronger.

I love how you tied together the temptation to look to the past for “the good life” and how Christianity looks forward. I’ve been thinking a lot about how Jesus and our faith really inverts all the thoughts and ideals of the world and there is another place it does so! I’ll be praying for your surgery!

First-will be praying for surgery success and peace of heart. LOTR extended edition marathon is the best cure for sure. Second, I am so so honored you linked to my article. Thank you very much-it means more than I can express.

I’ll definitely keep your upcoming surgery in my prayers!

I do have one question for you, Haley: one of my goddaughters is turning 9 this year and she reads above her grade level so it can be hard finding good books that are challenging enough for her but don’t have stuff in them that she isn’t ready for yet. Do you have any reading recommendations for books I could get her?
