Just started Mansfield park over audiobook (aka a free Spotify podcast I found... both audio copies are checked out on my library’s Libby page). I shouldn’t be surprised at how much I’m enjoying not, but I really am! Third Austen book I’ve read :)

I finally finished Emma, and thoroughly enjoyed it! My only exposure had been Clueless and then the 2020 movie with Anya Taylor-Joy. I'm looking forward to diving into Mansfield Park! I suspect I'll need to bookmark this post so I can keep track of the characters 🤣

This is my 4th Austen novel, but the first I’ve read since converting to Episcopalianism. So I have a greater curiosity about Anglicanism than when I read the first three. Looking forward to some little glimpses in Mansfield Park.

As much as Mary Crawford gets religion and piety wrong, she gets many things right. At the visit to Southernton she quips about religion as a mere show. She specifically talks about teaching upper class girls to make a display of holy obedience when they hate being in the chapel. Such effort, she claims, will never be fruitful in helping them be good woman. The narrator describes how Maria and Julia Bertram are given training on how to seem kind and polite, but never any strong principles. And I won't give spoilers, but the Bertram sisters are hardly virtuous women in the final chapters.
