Hi, I’m Haley! Book midwife (editor) and author.
First of all, thank you to everyone who sent encouraging messages after I shared recently that we’ve been experiencing a serious family crisis. I am optimistic that I can offer a more thorough explanation in a week or two. Prayers, support, and love are keeping me afloat. (Thanks also to new paid subscribers. The financial support I receive through Substack is more needed than ever as I navigate our new normal.)
But today I have only good news to share!
My newest book project, The Catholic Kids’ Cookbook: Holy Days and Heavenly Food was published at the end of October! This is a beloved project many months in the making that draws from years of research and practice of observing the liturgical year in the domestic church. Combined with the genius of my photographer friend (and Word on Fire colleague) Clare Sheaf and the design brilliance and food styling skills of our friends Marisa and Nic Fredrickson, I could not be happier with how beautiful the finished product is.
(Our little friend, Lydia, making soul cakes for All Souls Day!)
Clare and I created this book to be a visually enchanting invitation to the liturgical year for children. We wanted to help kids encounter the story of God’s love for us through the rhythms of the Church’s seasons, holy days, and beloved saints with 33 recipes they can make in order to participate in observing the Christian Year.
The recipes are written to be easy for children to follow and are labeled by difficulty level (because as a mom of four I know it needs to be clear to parents whether a recipe is something a small child can tackle solo or whether they need to block out time to supervise a more involved recipe).
The cookbook also includes a general introduction to the concept of the Christian Year, reflections on liturgical seasons, prayers, biographical information about saints, scripture, incredible sacred art, and STUNNING photography. We created this book in hopes that its young readers would curl up on the couch and want to soak in every single beautiful page.
It has been a joy to receive photos of kids making these recipes and sharing the finished product! An absolute delight.
And if ever there was a good Christmas gift for godchildren, children, grandchildren, or nieces and nephews—I have to say it’s this gem of a book.
Currently, Amazon sold out of books (although more are on the way to their warehouses) so the best way to get your copy is either through Word on Fire’s online bookstore (I believe they’re having a 20% off sale). OR ordering a signed copy directly from me. This is the absolute best way to support me because I make significantly more per copy if you order from me. (You can fill out this simple Google form to order).
And here’s what some lovely ladies like Kendra Tierney Norton,
, and are saying about it:So grab your copy from Word on Fire or a signed copy from me and get ready to be delighted!
Thanks for your incredible support! As I stare down the last few weeks of the hardest year of my life, it means more than ever.

What a sweet idea! I’ve been exploring more ways to incorporate the liturgical year / rituals into our home. This is so unique! Thinking of you!
Haley, this looks so lovely! I would love to get it for my kiddos and be able to support you (we’re going through OCIA and also working on kitchen skills), but curious how GF friendly most of the recipes are? We’ve got some food restrictions to work around so I’d hate to have it be a tease for them.
