The discourse on Harrison Butker’s speech at Benedictine has come and gone and I haven’t weighed in. Partly because I find myself less excited to contribute to the whirlwind of the daily discourse and partly because it’s Maycember, my town is still recovering from tornadoes, and I had an eleven-year-old’s Harry Potter-themed birthday party to plan.
But the conversation about SAHMs (stay-at-home-moms) vs. working moms and family life vs. career has made me wonder, what should I tell my own daughters about what I hope for their futures? Would I advise my girls to be SAHMs? Do I think that’s the best plan for their future happiness? A few years ago, I would have said yes. But my views have shifted quite a bit over time.
